Avoiding Work At Home Scams

Wouldn’t the world be a great place if everyone could do their jobs from home? No rush hour traffic, six a.m. alarm or hurried attempt to finish things before bedtime. You have probably passed those flyers on your way home from work or skipped over them as you were reading the Sunday paper. There are many “work at home” advertisements out there, and 99% of them are scams, bent on preying on people’s desire to spend time with their families or trying to reach independence from the workplace. But avoiding these scams can be hard, especially for those who desire so much to work at home that they are willing to look past almost anything. Here are some things to look out for when searching for a work-at-home opportunity:

1. Are they trying to charge you for information? Let’s face it, knowledge is power, and scammers know that. They use information they have found from experience or from the Internet to attract victims. The truth is, you could probably find the same information online yourself, with just a little bit of resourcefulness. It’s different if they are offering a subscription, ongoing information that may take you hours to find each week, but if they want you to pay for “the secret” to making money online, approach with caution.

2. Is your main job to “recruit” others? This is more than likely the classic MLM, or pyramid, scheme. There are a lot to these schemes that may appear legitimate, at first. Sometimes it can take months for all of the inconsistencies and negatives to pop up, but when they do, you’ve already lost hundreds of dollars. They draw you in with promises that if you work hard, you’ll make good money. It doesn’t sound too good to be true, and that’s why it attracts so many honest people. A classic MLM scheme requires that you recruit other people to sell products from a catalog (not that you sell the product yourself). It asks you to pay money for “training” so that you can become a better recruiter, and that you buy a certain dollar amount of merchandise per month from their catalog. In a way, you’re being cheated three times by one company. If you sense that an advertisement might hint at MLM, don’t even call for information.

3. Is the pay too much for a task that is too easy? Nothing in life comes that easy. Stuffing envelopes, sending chain letters, assembling products - those jobs are mostly done by automated hands now. Filling in advertisements for money? This job involves a lot of marketing knowledge and creativity, not sheer data entry.

4. Do they care who you are? If you apply for a job and they don’t ask for your employment history, a resume, or simply for you to fill out a W-9, then you don’t want to work for them. Chances are you’re either going to be scammed, or the company is doing something illegal and they don’t want the government to know. You should always be given some kind of notice as to how taxes will be handled, at the very least.

5. Are they requesting money up front? This is one of the obvious signs of a scam. If any company is asking you to shell out money before you see any kind of profit, you’ll more than likely never see the reward from that purchase. Some scammers will explain that you are joining a start-up company that requires start-up money. If this was the case, they wouldn’t be looking for “employees,” they would be looking for investors. Tread carefully.

There is some common sense involved when it comes to avoiding work at home scams. It doesn’t hurt to check any company out with the Better Business Bureau just to “make sure” it is legitimate. The worst that could happen is that you have found a scam, and that’s not a bad way to discover the truth. More than likely you will try to find information on the BBB web site, only to discover that there is nothing to show. The best things to do then is Google the name for information, or simply check out any of the number of work at home scam sites. Online employment through the internet holds a lot of promise in providing the means for a person to generate income from their homes or anywhere in the world. But like any good thing, there are those who have polluted the internet with their scams to promise you great earnings online while at the same time stealing money from you. The online employment scammer is faceless but very dangerous in that he or she can hide behind the cloak of being not only secretive but remote and out of reach. Here are some things to be aware of before you venture into the world of online employment.

First of all, online employment is not going to make you rich overnight. In fact, it may not make you rich at all. Most who work online have either the same standard of living or lower than what they had before if working on a freelance basis. If you are working for a company who is paying you a regular salary then this is not so much of an issue. What we are referring to is the self-employed person working through online employment or freelancing opportunities. This person has to constantly be seeking new work in order to thrive as the work will not knock at the door on its own. That means that at times, when the work gets hard to come by, the online worker can become desperate and susceptible to scams that promise big money quickly and for a minimum of work. If you remember anything, remember that if an online employment opportunity is too good to be true then it is probably 99% not true.

So the desperate person working online will typically take any job that comes along, work for any price, and offer services for free because the thought of not having work is too scary. While it is understandable that an online freelancer might have to lower prices in order to get work, there is a point where it becomes ridiculous. Just remember that while it seems there are many who pay low, it is not a good idea for you to work for too low because it presents your work as “cheap” and of low-quality. Hold your ground and don’t lower your prices below a level you want. A scammer trying to get your services for next to nothing will detect your willingness to roll over and will continue to try to get more and more out of you—never intending to pay more.

The other thing a desperate person seeking online employment does is work without any guarantees of payment. This why it is good to go through online job sites like Elance.com and Scriptlance.com (and there are others) where the payment for the job can be set aside in escrow. You can see that the person buying your services is serious and has the money to pay for them. You can maybe relax this as you continue to work for the person and know his or her payment habits but initially, you need to protect your work investment.

And never pay too much to find work. Some of these job sites charge membership fees which is probably okay as long as the amount they charge is minimal. For example, don’t pay an annual membership fee to a job site that is $125.00 only to realize at the end of the year you never got any jobs or any payments from jobs on the site. If you are going to pay membership fees, start very small and make sure your prices are such that you can recover those costs.

As our society becomes more high-tech by the day, with broadband connections and mobile communication now standard, the ability to work at home has consistently grown to match. Today, companies are finding work-at-home arrangements to be both cost-effective and a proven retention tool.

Work at home, or telecommuting, involves working from your home with communication to the office done by phone, fax, email, instant-messaging (IM), or secured message board/forum. Such jobs are those in which performance is evaluated by results, not observation. If an employee consistently produces at a high level, both by quantitative and qualitative measures, then a work-at-home setup should “work.”

In business terms, this supervisory style is referred to as “management by objectives.” To facilitate working from home, there is typically an open channel of communication at all times. This would be comparable to walking over to a person’s desk in the office or having a quick meeting in a conference room.

The term “telecommuting” was coined in 1973 by Jack Niles, who was one of the first to conduct tests on the effectiveness of work at home. The results? Even then, work at home proved to be an advantageous alternative. Now, some 35 years later, telecommuting has exploded to define how millions of us work. Statistics show that a decade ago, there were approximately 15 million telecommuters in the United States alone. Imagine what that number is today, with virtual private networks (VPN), videoconferencing, webcasts, and Voice over IP (VoIP) helping to connect people locally, nationally, and globally.

Nonetheless, some barriers do exist that prevent us all from working from home full-time. In some cases, work at home is simply not possible given the nature of the job. For some, being in the office is necessary. However, with a variety of jobs – computer jobs especially – direct supervision or on-site performance is not essential. And so, what keeps some companies from embracing the pros of telecommuting?

The first is “trust.” Trust must exist between the manager and managed and as with any relationship, trusting another person often takes time. Thus, it’s possible that eventually a manager may be more considerate of a work at home situation. However, trust in the system must also exist, which can be more of an obstacle. Does the manager trust that telecommuting can actually work?

This question leads to another reason why work at home isn’t always embraced: management style. Some managers feel better if the team works as a unit on-site. Even if groupware and other collaborative solutions essentially recreate the group dynamic wherever you’re sitting, for some managers this isn’t the same. For them, “management by observation” is most effective. And lastly, some managers decide against telecommuting because of the possible resentment it could create in fellow coworkers who are unable to work from home themselves.

For those companies that do make the most of telecommuting however, the rewards are mutual: for both management and workforce. Performance, measured by productivity, is usually high. Meanwhile, employee well-being typically rates high as well, as the stress of travel is reduced or eliminated all together. The time spent in traffic is then put to better use, such as quality time with the family. Employees who work at home may also be more inclined to stay with a company because of the added freedom, as well as the inherent trust that is part of the telecommuting model.

As more companies consider the possibilities and advantages of telecommuting, it only stands to reason that the number of those who do work at home will grow in the coming years. With Internet phones, VPN-capable routers, high-speed connections, and VoIP technology now easily acquired, it seems to signal a new chapter in the company handbook. How many will subscribe to it? Only time will tell. It should be said though that leading indicators suggest an upward trend.
